Read MoreThe Great Helium Debate – Putting Things into Perspective
A fantastic article posted by NABAS and written by Steve Marsh of The Balloon Experience in Wales about helium, well worth a read, enjoy Helium Shortage Ask most people what helium is used for and they will probably say balloons. The reason is simply that balloons are very visual and used in so many celebrations as decorations and as releases for promotion and numerous charity events. However the use of helium in balloons represents only a small fraction of the total use. People are generally...
Read MoreRussia has got helium
If anybody is worried there’s plenty of helium in Russia: “The international issues surrounding helium shortages, which continue to affect businesses around the globe, could soon be a forgotten memory after a spokesman from a Russian company highlighted plans to fill the void left by the US’s plans to sell-off all of the country’s reserves to repay a $1.3 billion debt to the US Treasurey – which has been ordered by US law” It’s pretty much old news that the price of helium is...

April 13th 2012 It all started back in April when a company call me enquiring about 8ft Chloroprene balloons. They needed 15 balloons and a bit of help. A meeting was set up and they visited my offices, a demonstration was given, 15 balloon were purchased and off they went, quite a normal day and nothing out of the ordinary there. Saturday 5th May 2012 I arrived at the office and went about my usual tasks for the day. At 1.30am I had a phone call on my mobile which went like this ” Hi...
Read MoreA BOC statement regarding Helium
“It’s important to be aware that there is a distinction between pure, liquid helium and impure, gaseous helium. BOC prioritises supplies of pure, liquid helium for critical medical uses e.g. MRI scanners in hospitals, ensuring that they can remain fully operational. Helium for balloons is a different product – it is impure and gaseous and recovered as a by-product of supplying liquid helium for the MRI market – a market which makes up about half of the helium...
Read MoreBALLOON GAS – a by-product of Grade A Helium
Did you listen to radio the other day Panic…. “Helium balloons should be banned” A scientist thinks inflating a balloon with helium is using up the Earths helium resources, helium should be used for more important things like MRI scans. Well, this is just not true. Balloon gas is a by-product of Grade A helium, it’s a dirty useless gas that if it wasn’t used by the party industry – it would be vented into the air. When balloon & party companies pay for their balloon gas they are...
Read MoreThe Mad Fool. The final day
Today is the last day of “Will The Mad Fool Make It”. For the past 8 days we have kept him floating 45 ft about the crowds in the West Orchards Shopping Centre, Coventry raising money for Macmillan Cancer Relief. We have been on site at 6am every morning to top up and add new balloons to make sure he has had maximum lift. During the course of the week there has been a 45ft banner that people have signed and left messages for “The Mad Fool” and today we sent him up for...
Read MoreThe Mad Fool, He’s still up there
Day 6 out of 8 and he is still floating. We have been on site every day at 6.30an to add more balloons or top up the deflated ones. At night the shopping centre is very cold and the helium contracts thus losing lift so more balloons are added just to get him off the ground. Once he is 45ft off the ground the balloons are in the warmer air inside the centre and expand. Only one balloon has burst so far and that was on the first day but we did add 6 extra balloons to the stack just for safety....

A very long day yesterday. Started work as normal at 9am but did not finish until 5.15am Saturday morning. Nearly a 24 hour shift. So what was I doing I hear you all ask. Over the past few week I have been working very closely with Stuart Kettell on his latest charity fundraiser for Macmillan. His goal this year was to be suspended high in the roof of the West Orchards shopping centre in the heart of Coventry. So rather than rattle on about how this was achieved I’ll let the pictures...
